HANDLING FROZEN MEAT.

MR. ESTELL HITS RACK. By Telegraph—Press Association.' Dunedin, Saturday. Mr. J. H. Estell, commercial superintendent of the Port of London Authority, addressed the Chamber of Commerce yesterday on the subject of trade with London. In the course of the address, he referred to the conditions of loading frozen meat at New Zealand ports. He said that meat was just us likely to get damaged in loading as in unloading, and if the authorities in London were prepared to perfect their arrangements for unloading and handling, he thought people should look into the whole question of loading at this end. At several of the ports in New Zealand meat and other produce had to be barged to ships in roadsteads, and canvas slings were used to lift the meat from the barge to the steamer, while the London authorities were using electric elevators and endless land conveyors to discharge the moat in Loudon. The New Zealand authorities were using in many eases old-fashioned slings, which had been practically discarded in London. Mr. Estell also mentioned that the members of the London Authority received no salary or fees, the | revenue going towards improving the I facilities at the port.
