ATHLETICS.
WAIWiA SPORTS. A SUCCESSFUL MKETIXU. The Warea Athletic Club's oiirlil.li a>liauii sports were favored with de.-trhtful weather, and there was a veiv iroou attendance on the pretty recreationground, charmingly- situated in the midst of native bush alongside the Warea Kiver. The chopping enclosure was jn first-class order, but the running track was rather romrli, and entries in this department were rather poor. I>. H. Holmes almost scooped the pool winning the 100 yds, 220 yds, and 44Uydsi. h. laylor, of IngHvood, won the half-mile event, being SSL . uml in Ule 440 yards. In the chopping the fields were wry large, and the finishes decidedly close. Indeed, the judges' position was by no means an enviable one, but thev came through the ordeal with general satisfaction. There was some dclav in starting the sports, but this could'not be helped in a district entire!v devoted to dairying, for work has to be done at home before pleasure can be considered. Once a start was made, however the officials worked verv hard and expeditiously, and kept events will up to tune, finishing .bright and early. Horsejumping, an innovation on the proprogramme, took on, and provided considerable entertainment. There were six entrants, and some good jumpin" was witnessed. These events will be in° eluded in future programmes. | The officials mainlv responsible for | the success of the "athcring were the starter and timekeeper, M r P. Brophy •the judges, Messrs. T. Clarke rendered him valuable assistance. The refresh-ment-booth controlled bv the club wa= presided over by Mrs Stephenson and Miss M. Gibbons, and thev did good business. Tlie music provided bv Van Heck's orchestra, consisting of' Mrs Woods (piano), It. Murphy (violin), ,T.
