WHITE SLAVERY.
AUCKLAND PROTESTKTH MUCH. SOME SUSPICIOUS CASES. By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. In consequence of the fact that Auckland City and the province have been prominently associated lately wlfh statements about white slavery, a Pressman made extensive inquiries, nit only among the police, but also amoqg , Societies and individuals who woix among the poor and criminal classes. The police state that they have been unable to discover any instances of t&e disappearance of girls due to the alleged traflic. Moreover, although it is stated thai cases have occurred, they have not received either complaints or requests to investigate. Several AucMand women whose labor bringß them in contact with a groat number of girls, were questioned. The concensus of their opinion was that there appears to be no organised effort in trafficking in girls here. Yet thele have been enough isolated instances of attempts to lure girls away from thmr homos to put every young woman on . Jier guard, and to make her very wary in her dealings with strangers. Another woman who meets and helm many girls coming to the city in search «f work, said that she knew of t*o cases of what was suspiciously lite white slavery, but although she hum inquiries in both instances, the evideqta was too slender to institute proceedings., .
