BILL PASSED AFTER BITTER DEBATE. By Cable —Press Association —Copyright Capetown, March 5. After a continuous twenty-four hour}' debate, it was decided to retain the deported men's names in the banishment clause. Ministers were relentless on this point, and stolidly ignored repeated requests to specify chargua against the deported men. Mr. Andrews, Laborite, hinted at the possibility of the workers of Britain refusing to handle South African produce. The Laborites vainly endeavored to secure the deletion of the word "undesirable" from the short title of the Peace Preservation Bill, contending that it classed the deported men with criminals. Mr. Cresswell's motion to delete Poutsma'a name and .substitute that of General Botha, was negatived by IK votes to 13 after live hours' debate. The Bill passed through committee and the House adjourned. MR. SMUTS AND THE STONEWALL "SILENT AS A SPHINX." Received 7, 1.5 a.m. Capetown, March 6. Mr. Smuts sat as silent as the Sphinx for 22 hours under the Labor attack. At the conclusion of the stonewall, Mr. Smuts and Mr. Cresswcll exchanged courtesies. MAIjJN'S MISSION A FARCE. Received 7, 12.30 a.m. London, March (!. The Labor newspapers describe the proposal to send Tom Mann to South Africa as a farce. The Labor Leader says he is the last man who should go there at this juncture.
