IMPROVED CONDITIONS. SOME GOOD-80ORES. MASEFIELD LEADING FOR THE BELT. By Telegraph—Press Association. Trcntham, Last Night. Tim conditions were almost ideal for the -shooting to-day when the competitors went on the mounds, and the marksmanship at the 800 yds range in the Otago match was excellent. No less than seven possibles were recorded, and eight "all huts" were returned. The men who fired first had a slight advantage in the conditions, as about nine o'clock a slight rear wind commenced to blow, which somewhat hampered the men who fired in the later sta.ecs. The possibles were scored by Pickering'(Linton), White (Auckland), Carter (Nelson), Clark (Kangitikei), Flvnn (Auckland), Belk (Linton), and Ji. Lovoday (Ohura). Masefield (Sounds), who has been shooting very consistently, secured 47 and 40 respectively, thus making top score. T. Henderson, also of the Sounds N.C., and H. Loveday (Ohura) made- 03 each.

Much interest attached to Oliver's shooting—he was leading in the aggregate after the close of yesterday's firing. Oliver secured a useful 47 in the shorter range, but fell all to pieces at the 1000 yds, his board reading 0342234450—27. It should be stated that the wind considerably increased after the men had commenced at the 1000 yds, and two competitors completely failed to find the target. Ching (Nelson) planted 45 on each target, and Dickson (Linton), with Carter (Nelson), also secured 90, with 50 on tiie first attempt and 40 on the second. Amongst the 89's were Mcintosh (Rangitikei), Bent (Aucklaad), Hunt (Suburbs), and Milroy (Nelson). In the Taranaki Match (10 shots at 1000 yds), the semi-final for the belt was fired after lunch, in bright sunshine and a light rear wind, and again the experienced marksmen held their own on the Sommorville range. The best score was made by Masefield, who secured i for his sighter, which he retained, and. with the exception of one 3, the remainder of his score was made up of bull'seyes. Masefield received a hearty round of applause from the largo knot of bystanders. 11. Loveday (Ohura) v/'.s next with 45, and Pcarce (Sandon) and Duncan (Westport) each scored 44. The wind was baffling and tricky during the match, and some of the competitors had the mortification of rising with blanks against their names.

On the Seddon range, where much the same atmospheric conditions prevailed, Vennell (Te Wharau) made top score with 48, hi 3 nearest attendants being Brownlee (Auckland), Maunscll (Opaki), and Steenson (Oamaru), who each registered 45. SHOOTIVl! IX FAMINES. It is curious how rifle shooting serais to run not only in families but in names (observes a contemporary). Out of three hundred ami fifty men firing at Trentham, a large proportion have brothers, cousins, fathers, or at least namesakes, among the. competitors. Thus, to look through the list alphabeti-

cully, there am two Andersons (or, rather, one is Andersen), one from Wanganui, one from Auckland. There are three JiatU, coming from places as far apart as Taihape, Woodviile and Lincoln (in Canterbury). Two Jielks and two Bella figure in the list, four Cameron*, two Carringtons, two Chings, four Cox's, four Craws, two Dag-gs, two Deilila, two Drummonds, two Evans, three (lebbies and two Heads. So it goes; no fewer than three members of the family of King, and there are an equal number of Smiths. There are three Uydes, two Laws, three Lovedays, two Joneses, M'lvors, three Oates, while the names Jbsrgan, Kandell. Percy, White, Willoughby, and Wilton each occur twice. The list could be extended, but the frequency of the. same names in a comparatively small number of men helps to bear out an old argument that shooting is hereditary, leather and son (or sons) are here in several instances, and families of brothers are quite common. Another peculiar feature is the evidence of rural migration. Brothers who n lew years ago all came from the same district, members most likely of (he same rifle club or corps, are now to be found resident in places hundreds of of miles apart. The development of the King Country and the Upper Waikato has attracted many men and names, familiar among marksmen as represenling members of old-established clubs in long-settled districts, are now down as members of some freshly-formed club in what a few years ago was virgin bush. Thus Trenthum is often a rendezvous for a family as well as riuVshooting reunion.

THE EMPIRE CUP. London, March 3. The Rifle Association hns decided to send a team, after the. Bisley meeting, to compete ior tlie Empire trophy in Australia.
