MEDICAL SCHOOL BUILDINGS. LARGE GOVERNMENT GRANT. Duncdin, Lust Night. At a special meeting, in committee, of the Otago University Council to-day, at which the Hon. J. Allen was nresent, a letter was received from the Secretary for Education intimating that the Government was prepared to grant £IO,OOO towards extending the present medical school buildings, and for giving accommodation for anatomy, chemistry, and physiology, on the un<U.'standing that only £SOOO will he payable before the end of the present linancial year. The Chancellor (Rev. A. Cameron) reported that a certain gentleman was prepared to give £2OOO towards a building for the pathological and bacteriological departments, and rooms for public health and materia medica. The estimated cost of the buildings was £12,000 and tile Council resolved to anply for a subsidy to provide the balance, on the assumption that the. Government would provide £ for £ on all voluntary contributions. After the Council came out of committee, a motion was conveyed to Mr. Allen and tile Government expressive of the Council's appreciation of their efforts in behalf of education. Mr Allen said the Government had put Duncdin out of mind altogether in making the vote, realisms' that the medical school belonged to the whota Dominion. He hoped the Council would make the school worthy of Xew Zealand. The Council resolved to appoint a nc>v professor to fill the vacancy created by the death of Dr. Scott. Commissioners were appointed to interview and report on applicants, and it was decided to advertise in Australia and New Zealand, as well as abroad. The appointment is to be for five years.
