FALSE PRETENCES. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, Yesterday. Edgar John Blackburn Clough, expresident of the Arbitration Wharf Laborers' Union at Lyttelton, was fined £SO for false pretences. Evidence showed that he collected a donation of two guineas from the secretary of the Metropolitan Club towards a presentation to the president of the union, lie said the Union Shipping Company was subsidising the amount pound for pound, and gave the name of Austin. Union officials said there was no official movement to make a presentation to the president. Clough sent the cheques to the secretary, who handed them to the police. Clough had previously been convicted of a similar offence years ago. NEWSPAPER LIBEL CASE. Wellington, Yesterday. The Chief Justice (Sir Robert Stout) dismissed defendant's summons for interrogatories in the libel action the New Zealand Times v. The Dominion, after counsel for plaintiff had amended the statement of claim by striking out the alternative cause of action, thus leaving the question to be determined on like claim for damages. GAMING OASES. Dargaville, Yesterday. At the Magistrate's court to-day, reserved judgment was given in the case of Barbarich, charged with betting on the Dargaville racecourse on January 14. He was fined £2O and costs 17s. Poynlon, alias Williams, was fined £3O and costs or in default one month in prison on a similar charge. Ten guineas was fixed as the cost of the appeal.
