DISTRICT NEWS
OPUXAKE. (From Our Own Correspondent). The Opunake Horticultural Society's autumn show was held in the Town Hall on Wednesday, and proved one of the best shows we have had for some time. Mrs. Walker, of Kaponga, was the principal prize-taker in cut blooms. Her exhibits of sweet peas, marigolds, and dahlias were splendid. Mrs. AV. Watson, of Te Kiri, was the most successful prize-taker in cooking classes, and Mrs. Opie next. Mrs. Brennan won the points prize in pot plants, and the prizes in the vegetable classes were evenly distributed. Messrs Toiiand, Whittington, and Quickenden secured points prizes. Messrs Quickenden, Tosland, Pettigrew, and .Mrs. Mackay divided tbo honors in fruit classes. Mr. MaeGregor (Rahotu) won in the honey section. Exhibits of cut blooms from Duncan and Davies and the" Morshead nursery were much admired, as also was a special exhibit of gladioli seedlings grown by Mr. Gibso.i. I of Uiverlea. Close on £lO was taken at . the doors. The secretary (Rev. Stent) ! and committee are to be complimented on the success of the show. The new shops in course of erection are near completion. The re-erection of the hotel has not yet commenced. Some £SB was collected in the Opunake township towards the Egmont nursing fund. The canvassers have already siiflicient funds to guarantee about three years' salary for a nurse.
