Walter Bradford Woodgate, ex-ama-teur champion, in a letter to The Field, advances strong reasons why high stakes between Britons should be deprecated. He declares that they tend to deter rising; talent and limit the reserve of British aspirants for championships. Barry is placing himself and British sculling in a false position if he insists on high stakes. It would be more dignilied, sportsmanlike, and politic if, after racing Paildon, he m-t Albany for £-200 a side.
