THE UREWE-RA LANDS. By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, Saturday. The Hon. W. 11. Herries, in a speech at Whakatane. referred to Native lands in the Hay of Plenty. He said individual interests of large blosks of Urewera land had been purchased befor* the titles were ascertained. Before he could open ii]> the land he had to straighten out the tangle bequeathed by 'his predecessors in office. The Government intended to prosecute the settlement of Urewera land actively .is soon as tlic title had keen legally defiled. c ' CUSTOMS DUTIES. Dannevirke. Saturday. An intimation of interest to loc*l bodies of the Bominion was made 'at the Borough Counoil meeting last evening, when a letter was received from tlio Secretary of Customs in reply to flic representations of tile mayor for a rebate of duty on a road roller the council is importing. The letter stated that the Minister of Customs had decided *o place a grant on the Estimates to enable a refund to be made of any duty which might be charged upon road rollers imported specially for 'ocal bodies.
