A Terrific Gale
VESSELS WRECKED. A TRAOIC RACE. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright Received 14, (i p.m. London, February 14. A terrilie gale is raging iu the Chan--1 nel. ' The Lands End coastguards spied a ship's punt containing three men a mile off being vapidly driven shorewards before heavy seas. They summoned the rocket- army brigade, which were four miles away. A tragic race ensued. Just as the brigade reached the top of the cliff the boat was caught by a huge wave and dashed on to rocks, being dashed to pieces. The crew disappeared in the mountainous seas.
The' three-masted cargo steamer. My Own, laden with cement, struck heavy was. Its hatches were smashed and admitted water to the hold and it sank at Shoreham. The crew of eight were drowned. The captain clung; to the rigging, where he was seen in the morning, and was rescued by a lifebont.
