The carcase butchers, buying and selling agents declare there must be a light to a finish. If the men refuse a coinpromise of a 49'/ 2 -hour week, with a rise of 5< for all slaughtering, both retail and export trades will cease work to-night, failing a settlement. A meat famine, is threatened unless to-night's meeting of employees reaches a settlement. There were no sales of stock at Ilomebush to-day for the first time in the history of the trade. The sales were postponed owing to the strike. A meeting of stock agents and buyers decided to postpone the sales till further notice. They iesued a statement to the effect that as a result of the Butchers' Union black-listing certain members of the retail trade, and forbidding carcase butchers to supply | them under threat of the withdrawal I of slaughtermen, it was decided that carcase butchers close down to-night | until the black list is withdrawn or an amicable settlement is reached with the committee appointed to handle the trouble. Stockowners are advised to stop forwarding till further advised. THE WHARFMEN'S STRIKE. CONFERENCE FURTHER ADJOURNED. Received 12, 12.55 a.m. Melbourne, February 12.
