BATHING FATALITY.

A bathing fatality occurred at titfl iitzroy beach yesterday, when Mr. William Herbert Femviek, of Fitzroy, a retired farmer, who had until comp(r.i-t'vi-ly recently been residing at Tariki was drowned, ' It appears that at about i n.m. jesierdav, Mr. Fenwick, with his daughter, went to tlie beach opposite tho iitzroy bathing sheds. When ha arrived there, a young man was already in tho water, and Mr. Fenwick joinffd him. Very soon afterwards hit companion heard a cry for help from Mr. lenwick, who had been bathing a little distance away in what wag apparently quite shallow water. He made an *(■ fort to rescue Mr, Fenwick, who wm being taken out to sea by the backwash, which was then setting very strongly. He was, however, unable to render any assistance to the unfortunate man, and only just got safely In the shore himself. There were other bathers within sail, and the body was ultimately brought Jo shore by the aid. of a boy named Knight, who rode into the breaker! ol) a horse. At abo»t 5.30 T)r. Wade arrived, and • with tho assistance of the Re?. H. T. Peat, used artificial respiration for two hours without effect. As far at hj« could judge, the unfortunate man b*d been in the water for about lialfanliour. Deceased man was 41 years of age. He leaves a widow and fainity.
