THE TONGAN TRADE.

PROPOSED DISCONTINUANCE OF THE SERVICE. By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, Tuesday. The chairman of the Auckland Harbor Board, at the meeting held to-day, moved that the Union Steamship Co. be requested to reconsider the suspension of the Auckland-Tongan service. The matter vitally affected the trado of the port. Recently the Board's bylaws were amended in order to encourage the island transhipment trade, which, it was found, was being diverted to Sydney. The suspension of the service would ruin the trade entirely, and would not only prejudice import" trade but would also prejudice the valuable export trade which had been carried f>» between Auckland and, Tonga. The motion was carried unanimously.
