DEFEATING NATURE.
WORKING THE PULMONARY ORGANS. MELTZEIt'S ARTIFICIAL VENTILATION. i By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. The papers read in the surgery section to day by Dr. P. Finasehi, junior, of Sydney, and by Dr. Nash, of Sydney, dealt with Meltzer's artificial pulmonary ventilation, and of insufflation anaesthesia, with the application of intra-tracheal ether. Mcltzer's methods stands as the great est advance in -surgery during the past few years, and it has rendered surgery of the chest and its various or- i gans as accessible to the average 9livgeon as the organs of the abdominal cavity. The value of the system of administering ether, described by Dr. Nash in the treatment of many dangerous diseases, is best illustrated by its effect on the operation for the removal of hydatids. The difficulty which ibe present-day system has to meet with is that in opening the chest cavity, there is great danger of the lungs censing to perform their functions. With this new method an anaesthetic, breathing is carried on practically independent of the action of the muscles of the human body, which are ordinarily employed in the function.
