Medical Congress
.SfTTIKO CONTINUED. FURTHER INTERESTING PAPERS. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. The sittings of the Medical Congress were continued to-day, and papers wore read and interesting discussion;) took place in practically every one oj tile eleven departments of the conference, Dr. Robertson, of Brisbane, read a paper giving- the results of a comparatively new method of curing the kind of deafness that, in the past ,liad been ; considered hopeless. This is the deafness in which the patient, hears well in a noise as when riding in a tram, a train, or in a ballroom. Of 30 cases quoted, IS did very well, five were improved, and seven were not affected. The good results were obtained in young people, the older patients giving less satisfactory results. Other members of the section quoted their experience with the method, and agreed with Dr. Robertson in his conclusions.
Tn an interesting paper on 'The Mental Measurement of Children," contributed by Dr. Harvey Sutton (of the Melbourne Education Department), the subject of standardising the powers of thought was dealt with as necessary hi practical work, and in the interests of the movement designed for the benefit of the children. The Rinet system of testing and fixing a certain standard to constitute normality for each age, was mentioned favorably. There was a large attendance of members of the section of medicine te bear Dr. Colquhoun, of Dunedin, who i read a masterly paper on "Rheumatoid lAntliritis," a disease similar to, but in no way connected with, rheumatism. The exact origin of the disease is yet I a matter of speculation and discussion. This condition is at present being treated by radium emanations, apparently with some success.
