EARTHQUAKE.

SEVERELY FELT IN WELLINGTON. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. ■ A very heavy earthquake, the most severe since 1904, occurred at 11.35 a.m. to-(lay. The tremors lasted fully live seconds, one being particularly violent. The post odice clock chimed and stopped, and many other pendulum and electric clocks in various parts of the city stopped. In some business premises the windows were damaged. People were alarmed and left the churches. Persons 011 the wharves and ships also got a scare, and made, in some cases,.record time for terra iirma. The wall of the Basilica of the Sacred Heart was cracked, but the congregation remained quiet at the exhortation of the priest. IX OTHER PLACES. , Palmerston North, Last Xight. A severe shock of earthquake was felt here at 11.30 this morning. With the exception of knocking some bottles off the shelves in a chemist's shop, 110 damage is reported locally, Several people in the churches rushed for the doors. Wanganui, Last Xight. A lengthy and severe earthquake was experienced at 11,34 to-day. Alarm was caused in churches, and some people came out of their houses. No damage is reported. A sharp shock of earthquake was also felt in New Plymouth at about 11.35 a.m. yesterday.
