ON' OPI'XAKK KOAD. | cau I'u.MiKs into j:ivj:i:. -Mr Daniel Deegan. of Opmiake, hail .1 j narrow escape for his life while motoring j home on ilondav night. It appears j that while crossing the Opmi Koad j bridge, somewhere near midnight, the steering-gear failed, with the result that the ear went over the hank, turned 11 somersault, and landed on the side of the river upside down. Mr Deegan being pinned to ):is seat by the steering wheel so effectually that he could not extricate himself. He was siill'iciently conseioii; to make himself as comfortable as he could under tho circumstance*, but theie is little doubt that his condition wis serious, as there was no knowing ho* long it would be before he was discovered, ft so happened, however, that the uir had upset a piece of the bridge timber, and this drew the attention of the driver of the OpnnakcXcw Plymouth coach to something being amiss, the horses having shied at the obstacle. This was particularly fortunate, as it led to the driver discovering .Mr Decgan's misfortune. Needless to say, no time was lost by the coach party in rescuing the victim from his imprisonment, carrying him to a neighbor's, Mr R Hoskm's.'niid obtaining the services of Dr. Barton from Opnnake, who promptly at tended to the patient, .and, it U pleasing to record, pronounced him fr<e from injuries Mr Deegan was subsequently takou ■homo, whore he quickly recovered from the shock, and, apparently, was as .It I as ever yesterday. The car was badly smashed. Iml tl.e machinery does not appear to have suffered any damage. Mr Deegan i> to be heartily congratulated on his marvellous escape.
