TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.") After a respite of barely five week?, Taranaki punters will be in the thick of racing again next wee kat Hawera, of racing again next week at llawera, Acceptances for the Taranaki Jockay Club's autumn meeting and the Egmont Racing Club's summer fixture closed last evening, and though the lists are not available at the time of writing, big fields are expected to be seen out at both centres. The ball will be set rolling with the Egmont meeting on Wednesday, when the Egmont Cup (one jnile and a half) and Egmont Sfakc.s (six furlongs) will be the principal events on the card. On Thursday ihe Atkinson Memorial Stakes (one mile and a quarter) and llawera Stakes (one mile) will he the chief attractions. The following week tho Taranaki Cup meeting will engage our attention—but of that more anon. lion Ton's appearance at the Tara- I liaki meetings was. according to a southern scribe, considered doubtful last. week. Bronze, Emperador and Los Angelos were ticked oil as likely to make the trip, and their presence will be eagerly looked for. Los Angelos, on whom ll.' Gray is reported to have the mount in the Egmont Cup, was sore after racing at Trentham, but tho ■ much-needed rain which fell on Thursday night may make the llawera course to the old horse's liking. Cheddar's failure to win the Takapuna Cup 011 Thursday cost local sports some money, but the Memwec. gelding ran such a fine race that he looks like proving a paying investment at u early dale. To be beaten by a Wanganui Cup winner in Tiresome, the latter in receipt, of 13 pounds, was no disgrace, and Cheddar may be under-1 incd as a horse worth following. Charlie Emmcrson's disqualification by the CiHitcrbury (X.S.W.) Club is by no means settled. The latest tiles from Sydney report that the Australian J.C. Committee has ordered "the inquiry to

'be re-opened, and as Enunerson luis the Press and "big men" of the sporting fraternity behind him, lie may win out after all.

How they do tilings at Foxlon! Prior to the running of the Second Hurdle Race down there, last, week, it was discovered that some daring persons had lowered three of tile hurdle.-) at ihe hack of the course. Some day they will take them away altogether! Inquiry into the affair shed no light on the identity of the perpetrators of this cheeky act, so it tan only be concluded that 1 some "spoil" wstli leanings towards the S.I'.C.A. thought the obstacles too high for the) horses to jump and discreetly lowered them! More lircs! This time at lliccarton. where the lire licnd reduced E. Cult's stables to a heap of ashes. Fortunately it occurred early in the evening, and the horses were quickly got out. Autumnus and Xightwateli gave sonic trouble, the last-named being kicked by another horse and galloping round the paddock. They say wax matches , are ''barred" at Cutt's, but tlie origin is—like so many tilings connected with ' racing- a complete mystery! In merry England it is the custom to blame the suffragettes. Here we blame Ihe wax match and the "sly cigarette." And then the matter drops! The Canterbury .lockev Chili's summer meeting takes place on Saturday next. Weights for the Midsummer Handicap show that Thrax has been let in lightly with 8.0. The meeting is of purely local interest. The 'chaser Dorando has made his reappearance on the tracks at Wanganui. and is looking very well. All through th« spring and summer Doranilo had a daily swim in the river, and that, probably accounts for his fitness.

It was only a matter of hcallli for Xorth-Kast to win the hurdle race at Takapuna on Thursday, and that lie did very easily, paying less than "evens." Reports from Auckland made out that the chestnut was not too sound, but he has proved a cheap investment for Mr. D. Thompson, who got hack considerably more than, the horse's purchase money at the first time of asking. Bridge and Wimmera are in work again at Caulfiehl in preparation for autumn stick events. A good pair, en. Walt? Postillion's running at Ti'onth.im shows the black horse to be no stayer, but up to six furlongs he has no superiors in the Dominion.

Iliad's Hero, who changed hands recently, is enjoying a spell at Grpenmeudowb. Roosevelt is another horse that is on the easy list. Siniipis has proved herself to he one of Xcw Zealand's best stayers, anil if the mare, continues in good fettle. Mr. Durrant intends to give, her :i change to distinguish herself on 'Stralian courses this vcar.

Tripoli's two runaway victories at Takapumi, resulted in big dividends going into the hands of a fewf people. It is marvellous how some horses improve between one meeting and another. Labour Day, who broke down about six months ago, has been put into commission once more.

Toreador is making a good recovery from the operation to his throat, and should be on the job again about Easter time.

From all accounts, Dclemla was unlucky in having to split first money with Chime on Thursday. She has only 8.1 in a four furlong flutter to-day. Tiresome, who won the Takapuna Cup, ran a close third to .folic Fille and La Reina last year. Subsequently .she led it-he fip.ld "home in the Wangamii Oup, carrying O.S. Weights for the Wanganui Cup and Flying Handicap are due on Saturday next. Woodville weights should appear on the same day.

Winners at Takapumi ami llawera will be required to carry penalties of 71bs for one win. or 1211 is for two or more handicaps, except in the ca.-e of the Taranaki Cup, when winners ni'iy be re-handieapped.

Goodwin Sands lias scored three consecutive victories since being sent across to Australia to race in unregistered ranks. The bay daughter oi Soult started seven times in \"ew Zealand last season without notching a wjn.

The Auckland sportsman, Mr. George Robinson, ha.'i evidently tired of Santa Rosa, Overtime and Decorate. The trio were to have been offered at auction yesterday.

A good word is spoken for the. two-year-old fillv Mia Cara (Bpniform— Carissima). The writer had a. look at her at Trainer Tilley's stables rice.ntly, a.nd she is a handsome little brown filly, showing excellent quality, and possessed of a dooile disposition. Her second to Daytime in the l'itzherbert Handicap at Trenlham should be tlie forerunner of many good wins. The much-travelled Xcw Zealand Horseman. L. H. Hewitt, is now riding winners in sunny Italy. He can still, !»« to scale at 8.0. and is enjoying a good run. • The Wellington Stakes' winner, Reputation. is another of the progeny of that fine mare Stepfeldt. When you consider that she has presented Elevation, Provocation, Gravitation, Tribulation, Reputation. Ovation, Vocation and Culmination to the Turf, she is a nmtron worthy of—congratulation!
