The Sydney Fire

It was a startling spectacle, and was watched by fifty thousand people. The outbreak was discovered at 10.15, and within an hour, in spite of the efforts of the combined force of the local brigades, only blackened waMs marked where -stood oni! of the busiest hives of industry in the city. Ainsworth's draperv establishment was seriously threatened, but the brigade managed to confine the fire to one building. Pieces of burning material were carried as far as [lordern's. A constant watch luu! to be ke|it on the big premises in the. vicinity. The fire is believed to have been due to an explosion on the top floor. The building occupied luilf-an-acre, and was ■owned by the trustees of the late Samuel Hordern and was leased, by Mr. Sidney Snow. The. damage is estimated at £15,000. The building was insured for £25,000.
