The death is reported of Mr. W. liamsden, manager of the I'etoce Woollen mills. Mr. Maurice Fell, M,A. (Oxon) has been appointed to an assistant-master-ship at Christ's College. Mr. Fell WJlfl j educated at Winchester and Oxford. He will arrive in Cbristclnirch in June, and , will succeed Mr. Lutton Carter as head of the modern language department on tlio latter's return to Clifton. The terms of appointment of twelve members of the Legislative Council expired on January ii; namelv, the Hon. J. Anste.v, J. liarr, .1, li. 'Callan, W. K. Collins, 11. Cilmer, 11. Luke, W. w. Mcl'iirdle, .T. T. I'aul, 0. .Samuel, J. K. Sinclair, (i. J. Smith, and W. 11. Tucker. In addition to these, the terms of office of the Hon. J. E. .Tenkinson and the Hon. J. ltigg will expire on July 1, and that of the Hon. I{, A. Loughnau on May 6. As previously stated, Messrs l'.arr and Paul have been reappointed.
Canon Sedgwick, who has been elected Bishop of Waiapu, was born at Fremantle, near Southampton, at the South of England, and is the third and only surviving son of the B«v. A. Sedgwick, rector of Freemantle. He received his early education at Home, and then at Maidstone, Kent, and at St. Martin's York, whence he went to Christ's College, Cambridge, where ne took his degree in 18S1. He was ordained in 1882 by the, Archbishop of Canterbury, and served jiiis first curacy in Walteringbury, in the diocese of Canterbury. In 1884 he entered the Xavv as a chaplain, and served in the marine battalion at Suakim, being chaplain to the. land force.-, and visiting the ships. For his Services lie received the Suakim medal and clasp and the Khedive's bronze star. From 188.) to ISSG he was chaplain on Loard ll.Thunderer, and on leaving the Navy he accepted the living of St. Patrick's Hockley Heath, where lie remained from iss'li to 18S0. He then became rector 0 f Bedford, Capo Colony, and then returned to England, and for a few month- held a curacy at Kversliot Hor.-et. Till J.'lOl lie was private chaplain to the Karl of Ifowe, but being desiroiiM of further service in the colonies. lie accepted the cure of Waikari, Xoi'tli Canterbury, which he held from ljiOl to I 'WW. He was vicar of Akaro.i till lnoi, and then became vicar of St. I.tike'-. Christcliurch, where he remained till last year, when Bishop Julius appointed him to the nost of diocesan missioncr ami secretary of the Church Mission Fund. Tn this position Canon Sedgwick ha- hardly had time to do anv i work, but luid mapped out his work for the present year. |
