AN INGLEWOOD CASE.

AX OLD MAN'S LETTED. J.KADS TO TKOI/ISLK. At the Magistrate's Court, Inglewood, on Thursday, before Air W. (J. Kenrick, S.M., J. 0. Taylor, of Wuiongona. proceeded against W. (J. Vercoo for assault. The evidence disclosed that Taylor had been writing letters to Miss Humphrey, of Inglewood, to whom Yercoe is engaged, and annotated a book by Louis Deck. Some of the passages interpolated were read to the Court, and were of a decidedly amoroiu nature,

When Vercoe found out -what plaintiff had Ijeen doing, he met him in the street, blacked both his eyes, knocked out hia artificial teeth, and injurel his nose. Plaintiff then instituted the present proceedings. The Magistrate; in giving judgment, said had the defendant gone to the informant and told him of the relations, existing between himself nud Miss Humphrey, and warned him that his efforts at correspondence must cease, he would have been in a much better position before the Court; but there was nothing to show that the informant was aware that the lady was engaged to Vercoo. Of course there was no justification of such an assault; but the position would have been better in mitigation of fine. Tlie conduct of Taylor bad been very unwise; he was an and, anparently, thought lie, wa™oins> back to his youth, but was entering his dotag.;; but if lie bad been warned f the position between the parties the Court would have looked at the case in a different light. There was no possible excuse for plaintiff's conduct, which was highly improper; but a young man should not treat an old one as the defendant bad done. Defendant would b? conricted and fined £2, and costs.—Abridged from Record.
