HOSPITAL SATURDAY COLLECTIONS A RATHER SMALL RESPONSE. The organisers of the Hospital Saturday movement this year were unable to persuade the young ladies that it should be their pleasurable duty to assist, in providing funds for the hospital, and the army of collectors on Saturday was small. This year the canvass of the country districts was omitted, and the people, from whom cash was asked were the townspeople, and such farmers as Iconic to town on business on Saturday. The boxes sent out to the Public Works employees out east were returned with a not too-large assortment of coins of small monetary value, despite the fact that such a very large number of tlieso men had received treatment at the hospital. The records show, too, that a considerable proportion of the co-oper-ative workers who have availed themselves of the skilled attendance at the hospital have yet to pay for the) atten- : '<tion received. But, that hy the way. I The seven collectors worked briskly, and I gathered in some £SO or so, a good re- - cord for street collections only, but nothing to boast about as a district contribution, ft can safely be said that a very large proportion of the money collected came from the people, who are already contributing in rates, which is contrary lo the spirit of the movement. 'Madame Bernard's matinee picture performance, and door collection netted £3 l!Js fld. which indicates that this wag not very greatly pushed. Ticket sales should have netted more than double that amount. The money collected (jams a Government subsidy of 24s in the £l. If the town ladies are tired of collecting, won't the country ladies ,have a try next year? Personally circularising our energetic, young ladies of the outlying districts can hardly fail to arouse their interest and co-operation. 4ml, really, it irf not fair to leave the work year hy year to the town ladies only.

THE BURNS SUPPER A SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION.
