Lord Denman

RESIGNS FEDERAL GOVERNOR GENERALSHIP. AX UNEXPECTED ANNOUNCEMENT.

By Cable —Press Association—Copyright Received 20, 0 p.m. Melbourne, January 20.

Lord Denman, in a speech to the Australian Natives' Association, at the Foundation Day banquet, made the unexpected announcement that he had resigned the Governor-Generalship, and was returning to England during the present year. He said he did not wish to weary the meeting with a recital of his reasons for this step, beyond saying that he was in indifferent health. At one time he had considered asking for leave for some months in order to obtain a complete change, but he had decided that it was not in the best interests of the Commonwealth that the Covernor-Gencral should be absent when the political situation was so full of .uncertainty, and there was a possibility of a political crisis occurring. Lord Denman added that it would cause him a severe wrench to have to leave his work in Australia.

Received 27, 12.4 a.m. Melbourne, January 20. Messrs. Reid and Cook, and other speakers at the banquet, deeply regretted Lord Denman's resignation, and eulogised his administration.
