January 23. <.r«»KWi'll, who was arrested last week when attempting to address the strikers, lias been sentenced to a month's imprisonment without hard labor and lined £2O for publishing pamphlets likely to excite ill-leeling. lie was aNo lined ■CUI, or fourteen days' imprisonment, for attempting to induce men to refrain from working. Cresswell declared that owing to the proclamation of martial law he issued leallets instead of advice orally. Ho wished to advise the men as to the best way of conducting themselves, especially in preventing' public violence, lie would always advise, tho men that once tl'ey had struck they should stand together and be loyal to one another. The Crown Prosecutor admitted that there was nothing very inllammatory in the pamphlet. No doubt Cresswell's intention was not violence. The pampnlci, however, was calculated to induce a continuation of the strike. Oesswcll's sentence will prevent him attending the opening of Parliament foil January 30, and, being under martial law, no appeal is possible. The Magistrate held that the preimble of Oress'well's pamphlet, was likely 1.0 cause disaffection. Cresswell was fin xlucatcd man and a member of I'arlunent and ought to bo punished more ieverely than others. lie would not nilict hard labor, though ho thought Jreaswell deserved it.
