The CoKrt cxprcsaly admitted that four out of six police inspectors and two commissioners of police had accepted bribes. The evidence showed that it was customary for persons seeking licenses or privileges in connection with restaurants, cafes, and dancing halls, to send to the police or to their wives luncheon hampers with hnudred-ma:-k ■ notes concealed therein. Officials testified in the. case of the i robbery and murder of a girl, wdiere promptitude was urgent, that the police took a cab instead, wherefore, surcharge allowed was only three pence half-penny a day, although ample money was at the disposal of the political police. The correspondent adds that the political police's activity in harrassing Socialists was without any apparent effect, beyond au increase in the Socialist strength.
