WORK AND WAGES.
A CnniSTUIILMiCIL DISPUTE. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, \" est onlay. Judgment was given in the Arbitration Court- in a case brought by the Canterbury Motor-car and Horse-drivers' and Livery Stable Employees' Union. It states that after the bearing, and while the dispute was under consideration, it was reported by the newspapers that members of the union had engaged in a strike. The court caused inquiries to be made and obtained a written statement from .Mr. Hunter, secretary of the union, who said the strike was ordered >l>y a majority of members on November 24 and called off as far as mo»t of the men were concerned three, days later. These facts, adds the judgment, show that the union was guilty of an offence under section (1 of the Act and liable to have its registration suspended. The court was of opinion that under the circumstances it. should refuse to make an award and the case' lie dismissed. It might be the case that the workers immediately concerned in the dispute were opposed to the strike, sunt therefore suH'ering for the 'blunders of others. Drivers of- motor delivery vehicles could join the new union and obtain an award through if. N'o such union was available in the case of the livery -table employees. The court recommends that employers pay these workers the minimum wage fixed l>y the last Auckland award, viz., £2 8s weekly.
