LAWN TENNIS.
Till-: TAItAXAKi: TOURNAMENT. CONCLUDING GAMES. The Taranaki Lawn Tennis Association brought its tournament to a close at Ifaweva. ;. '.'l'.tevday. Most of the matches played were semi-finals and finals, and some brilliant tenuis was witnessed, the standard of play being quite ciiual to that of provincial tournaments generally. The courts were again in excellent order. ''There's one tiling I like about this tournament," said Ollivier, ''am! that is the courts. I don't know that I've played on much better anywhere."
The management of the tournament must.!)!' coiuplimcntcil on tlie manner in which it: was' pulled through, despite the I'iiet (hilt the. secretary was managing his iiift tnurmuitenl. and that his colleague, Mr. Wliitehorn, had met with an iiee'nlcnt which prevented ids taking any active iwrt in the workw Messrs. W'iiite, Webster, Bell. Brown, and \l Caplcn. members of the committee; were prominent helpers right through the. tournament, giving grout assistance in a hundred and one willing ways. In the men's championship doulilcs, Ollivier and Webster easily accounted for T'ottks and Caplcn, and then went on to meet Powdrell and Pearse. Here, too, they proved easily superior. Ollivier made excellent us« of his American service, and mixed the stulV prettily, to the delight of the spectators and the confusion of his opponents. ' Webster also played a slashing game, and permitted no liberties. Ollivicr's fine, placing' to the backhand corner, or a passI ing shot down the. centre line, were, responsible for most of the strokes. The game ended in Webster's and Ollivicr's favor, li-1. o—i Circat interest was felt in the meeting of M.iss A. Brewster and Miss V. Simpson in the final of the ladies' championship singles. Miss Brewster led 5—4 in tho first set, an<| Miss Simpson then drew up level, a all. Miss Simpsou served in the next game, which her opponent took to 15, and the. set, (I—s. .Miss Brewster got in some, splendid shots in the next set, while? Miss Simpson appeared to be tired. The set went to Miss Brewster 6—h, and with it the championship. ' The ladies' championship doubles fell to Misses Brewster and Ciraham, who beat the Misses Hughes, of Pahiatua, (s—l, A—s. The latter pair played below form, but still the standard of play was high, and some-exciting rallies were witnessed. The second set was very stubbornly contested,'and contained six deuce games. Two good matches were witnessed in the semi-finals of the combined championship doubles. Pearse and Mrs. I'eavee were run to three sets by Caplcn and Miss Graham, the scores being o—3,
.">—(i, o—3. Pearse was well on his game, smiting hard and getting good work at the net. Jennings and Miss Brewster took the test two of three sets from Lampo and Mrs. Gordon, a Wangiinui pair, who had played stpadily throughout the tournament. They were no match, however, for their opponents, who won, (i—l, (I—l, improving as they proceeded. The final fell to Jennings and Mis 3 Brewster by the same margin of points, both Pearse and Mix Pearce being outplayed at all points. Some of Jennings' passing shots were loudly applauded. J Curtis gave Lampo. all he wanted, or nearly all be wanted, in the linal of the handicap singles, running him to GO—SS, and wanted but, a little lu«lc to pull off the match. Curtis showed improvement on the opening day's play, and the. hotter the proposition placed before him the better his play.
The. result of the final in the men's handicap doubles between the Powdrclls ainl Wybornofl was a foregone conclus-
ion, but the losers put up a game, fight. They are o. very difficult pair to beat, .lm( the Powdrclls, Old opponents, had their measure.
Misses R. Hushes and .I*. Graham (Te Knili) were left in the final of the handicap singles. The Misses Simpson could make no headway against Mesdamcs Powdrell and Cordon in the final of the ladies' handicap doubles, the southern ladies puUjing more vigor into their play and beating the Xew Plymouth players by forcible driving. Tn the combined handicap, Mr.■and Mrs. Powdrell beat Lampo and Mrs. Cordon, and then dismissed Caplen and Miss Graham, (50-40. The final was fought out between Mr. and Mrs. Powdrell and White and Miss Hughes. .MEN'S CHAMPIONSHIP DOUBLES. Second round: Tonics and Caplen heat A. C Thompson and 1L D. C'alpen, IS—--11. 0-2.
