THEISM.

MR, BALFOUR'S LECTURES. Tiy Cable —Press Association —Copyrigit Received 16, 12.30 a.m. Loijdon, January 15. Mr. Arthur Balfour's "Gilford" lectures are exciting attention. He argues that the body of beliefs which all entertain about the world, men and things, would be more reasonable if regarded in a. theismic setting. He said that until the idea of consciousness was added to evolution, the latter was an unmeaning phrase. Unless behind men's reasoning, ethical sentiments, and feelings for beauty, men found n rational cause, a moral cause, and a God wlio cared for beauty, these beliefs would be laruvlv valueless.
