The first eruption of Soknrashima, occurred on Saturday morning, when enormous 'blocks l of -.tone were thrown 2701) feet in the air. Some were carried twenty miles. ( Streams of lava overwhelmed three villages, killing many ]>eople. The remainder fled in boats to J\agoshima, but the lire spread across the bay to the mainland. Further eruptions carried lava to Kagiwhima, which was ignited. The inhabitants fled, hut hundreds perished. Refugees crowded freight trains leaving for the north, and by the evening Kagoshima was deserted. The sole occupant was a plucky telegrap'h official, who telegraphed yesterday that the .whole place Wan covered with ashes and smoke and that the, earthquakes were increasingly horrible.
Further reports show that Sokuras'liima is in eontiimous eruption and is now enveloped in llanics.
The volcano has been dormant for I'M years. Tho island, which contained 10,000 inhabitants, is now unapproachable. Fugitives state that half the population perished.
