A message from Astoria stales that the Gernina barque Eilbeck has arrived with the captain and crew of the British collier Battle Abbey, which was burned at sea in December, when her coal cargo from Newcastle, New South Wales, for Vancouver, took lire. The cargo burned for a week before the ciew took to the whale boats. Three days later idle Eilbeck rescued all. CAPTAIN'S ACCOUNT OF DISASTER. BELIEVES SHIP HAS IiI.OWN UP. New York, January ft. Captain Masters, interviewed, said the Battle Abbey made a fair passage until three weeks out, then the coal caught lire. They fought the llames for days unsuccessfully, then took to the boats. The lif'st one put out was smashed at (he ship's side, the second stove in, but. the third saved them. At early dawn they "put oil' on the ocean, seeking the nearest land, till rescued by the Eilbeck. They were taken to Astoria. 'The caplain believes the ship has blown up ere this, owing to the huge holds. The captain's wife and two daughters were on board. SALVAGE OF THE TASMAX. A REMARKABLE FEAT. Sydney, January 9. •Details supplied by the Japanese steamer lnaho AJaru. which towed oil' the Tasnian, through the agency of Pilot Wilson, show that it was one of the linest saves on the Australian coast. The vessel and vargo were valued at £200.000. The dangerous position was escaped by careful handling, with small damage.
