A MOTOR ACCIDENT.
YOI'NC- LADY RU.V oYKR. All accident occurred in Central Devon Street yesterday afternoon, when .Miss Ernestine Howell, a daughter of Mrs. 11. Howell, of I'owderham -Street, New Plymonth, was run over by a motor-ear belonging to Messrs. .Tolm'-toii Bros., and driven by A. H. AYliite. At Die t>in" (>f accident Mi.-v Howell was crossing Devon Slit'el, Rll'l the Kitzro.v 'bus was between Brougham Street and Cvirvio Street. ;ri)in_r eastwards, followed at a short distance by tlu> motor-car in qvicstioii. wliieb is one of the heaviest cars in New Plymouth and which was carrying a I>iload of groceries. .Miss Howell stood until the 'bus had passed, but did not appear to see the car. Just as she moved forward again to cross the road behind the 'bus, (he car struck her. She was knocked down, and two wheels of the car passed over both of her thighs-.
Hiss Howell was carried into Mr. Sykes's shop, cut and bleeding, but not unconscious. Dr. Home arrived immediately, and lie found that no bones were broken, and that Miss Howell could be taken to her home, whiili was' accordingly done. The driver of the ear stilted that l.e was not driving very fast, and }ie sounded the hooter of the ear a* he approached Mis.; Howell, but be could not tell which way she would move. lie de-clutched and put on tlie brakes, but could not avoid a collision.
