During the I manoeuvres he was sent for bv the King, who questioned him closely as to the. progress of the universal training scheme, and showed keen interest in the Kew Zealand citizen army. He especially inquired of the Third Mounted Hides' (Auckland) and the First Infantry (Canterbury), of which lie is colonel-in-ebief. The King was riding a X T ew Zealand horse, a black charger which has been bis favorite mount for nine years. Lor,l Roberts asked («Vnerai C'odley a great many questions concerning universal service, the opposition to which, Cleneral Godley added, I was happily able to say was not very serious, as people fully appreciated its advantages. tlenjoral Godley conferred with the War Office on matters connected with Kew Zealand defence, and discussed with the Minister!! possible co-operation 'between the forces of New Zealand and Australia.
