EMBEZZLEMENT CHARGE.

A DANGEROUS SYSTEM. Per Press Association. Wellington, Wednesday. During investigation at the Magistrate's Court of charges against a clerk named Athol M'Caul, of embezzling over £6OO belonging to his employers, Messrs Gollin and Co., it transpired that accused's system was to draw a cheque on the Customs for an amount larger than the duty payable "not negotiable." He would be paid the balance in cash, sometimes receiving substantial amounts. An expert, giving evidence, said the system adopted by the Customs was_ a danger to the commercial community and was rotten to the core.
