THE DREADNOUGHT.
DISAPPOINTMENT AT RUSSELL. CHILDREN SOAKED TO THE SKIN. ' Per Press Association. Whangarei, Last Night. The excursion from Whangarei to view the battleship at the Bay of Islands was most unpleasant. Over 500 children and their guardians left by train for Opua. where the Tutanekai and Hinemoa were to ferry them to tlje battleship. Shortly after leaving Whangarei, heavy rain set in and continued with brief intervals the whole day. Owing to bad weather, the New Zealand was late in arriving. There was no shelter for visitors, who were soaked through before they got on board. 5 The children's train on the return journey was nearly three hours' late in arriving at Whangarei, and the little folks were sodden and chilled. A MESSAGE TO NEW PLYMOUTH. The following communication has been received by His Worship the Mayor (Mr. G. W. Browne)Dear Mr. Browne—Before sailing, 1 wish to write and say how very much I appreciated all the kindness and cordiality which was shown to mv officers and myself today, and if I may do so without being leonsidered presumptuous, may I con" gratulate you and all those who had charge of the many arrangements for the splendid way in which everything was organised. I personally can never for-' get my plertsnut day spent amongst you all in New Plymouth.—Believe me, yours truly, Lionel Hal-sey, Captain. * Ihj| note paper used for the above letter bears the emblem of the British Crown and underneath it "Ao-te-Aoa," H.M.S New Zealand.
