By the Atua, which arrived at Auckland this imorning from Sydney and ffsland porta further news was received ijiif: the reeeat outbreak of smallpox on (the steamer Michael Jebson, at Apia. .(Samoa). It jappears that the Michael M>son, a Genuan steamer of 1251 tons, awived at Apis on May 18, from Hongkong, with oveir 1000 Chinese coolies on heard, who are -under contract to work on (the plantations in Samoa. Prior to the -.TOSsel reaching Apia a case of smallpox 'Was discovered amongst the coolies, and jH»e steamer was ordered to an anchorage outside the harbor. No coramunieaition was allowed between the ship fl*d the shore, and the affected patient was removed to a barge about seven mftes along the coast, where he was plae#d under striet observation. The Atua wrived at Apia on June 3, and up to that date no one Isad landed or boarded th« infected steamer. It was reported, however, that several more cases had broken out amongst the .coolies. On the discovery of each fresh case the captain of the Michael Jebson had to heave up his anchors and steam up the coast, so ae to land the patient on one of the barges. Everything possible was being done to stamp out the disease when the Atua-left Apia.
