Mr. (1. OUivier, of tennis fame, is at present on a visit to Xew Plymouth. Mr. -T. D. Henry, oil expert, accompanied by Mr. L Stevens, who joins the staff of the Taranaki Oil Weils, Ltd,, a* chief chemist, arrived in New Plymouth last night. Miss 11. J. Yinc was admitted by Judge Chapman on Tuesday as n barrister and solicitor of the Supreme Court. Miss Vine, who is the first lady lawyer in Wanganui, is an LL.B.. of the New Zealand University, and will shortly be sitting for her 1.1j.D. degree.

The Hon. li. I leaf-on Ithodes (Post-master-General and Minister for Hospitals) accompanied bv his private secretary (Mr. W. ( rowJ arrived in New Plymouth last night hy the mail train. The Minister was conducted over the Winter Rltow by the President of the Society {Mr. .1. -T5. Oonnett), and afterwards received several deputations, introduced by Mr. fl. J. Okcy, M.P. The lion. Mr. Rhode-, leaves earlv today for Awakino, where he opens the new post office on Saturday. He then proceeds on a trip up the Mokau river.

Word has been received from Sydney of the death there a few days ago of Auckland's first Mayor, Mr. P. A. Philips. Tho late Mr. Philips arrived in ~ew Zealand as long ago as 1848, and for many years was cioscly identified with , the public life of the young city. In 1800 he was appointed chairman of the City Hoard of Commissioners, which position lie held for two terms, and when the present corporation was instituted he was elected Mayor, to which, position he was also elected on two subsequent occasions. lie was a member of the Pro vine in! Council for nearly six years, and while on the legislative body was sue eessfiii in getting the control and management of its own valuable endowments handed over to the eitv.
