RATING ON NATIVE LANDS.

THE NEW BILL. Per Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. A conference of representatives of county councils, the Hon. VV. Hemes, Minister of Native Affairs, presiding, was held yesterday to discuss the improvement of the legislative powers of local bodies to enforce the payment of rates on native lands. The movement was initiated by the Patea County Council. .It was .pointed "out that in the past four years counties in the North Island struck rates totalling £46,540 on native lands, but only £1,200 - vas collected. The delegates urged Ihe Minister to put the natives on the 6ame footing as Europeans in this natter. Mr. Herries was sympathetic, and said that he would do something in this direction. When the Bill was ready, local bodies would have a chance to consider its provisions.
