CONCILIATION COUNCIL.

SLAUGHTERMEN'S DISPUTE. Per Press Association. Invercargill, Last Night. Mr. J. R. Triggs, Conciliation Commissioner, sat to-day to hear the dispute between the Southland Slaughtermen*! Industrial Union of Workers and the Southland Frozen Meat and Produce Company, Ltd., and the Ocean Beach Frozen Meat Company, Ltd. Messrs. W. T. Edge, Wm, Peters and Geo. Cooper represented the union, and Messrs. Jno. McQueen, David Cochrane and R. A. Anderson appeared on behalf of the employers. Mr. Triggs read a letter from the employers, stating that they did not admit .any of the claims of the Slaughtermen's Union, and objected to being made parties in the dispute, on the ground that ,they were working under an agreement with the Murihikau Slaughtermen's Union. Mr. Edge explained that there were two factions—a registered union ,and an unregistered union. They were trying to bring the latter into the union, but the employers were doing their utiiriost to keep them out. f." "At this-juncture Mr. Triggs asked the I union representatives" to-retire, while he put the position of similar companies before the employers. When discussion was resumed, Mr. Triggs said: "I note, gentlemen, on looking at the list, that you are perfectly \ well within your rights in citing the ,ernployers, and what I would suggest .would be this: You understand that ■there is .going to be an alteration fV the Arbitration Act very shortly?" h Mr. Edge: I do not. 1 Mr. Triggs: Well, it will be one of ttlie first measures coming before the .House. Under the circumstances, I think it would be wise for you to adjourn the case, because the employers have an objection to making an agreement. if Mr. Edge: What is the objection? j' Mr. Triggs: Well, they are not prepared to state their objection. Mr. Edge: Will they be prepared to make an agreement, then? Mr. Triggs: I do not know what they will do then. J i Mr. Edge: We won't have an adjournment, so the case will have to go to the Arbitration Court. This closed the business.
