THE WINTER SHOW.
A GREAT DISPLAY. OPENS TO-DAY. Viewing the great display that the Taranaki Agricultural Society offers inthe Coronation Hall to-day. it is difficult to believe that this ia only the fourth year that the Society has posted up its posters, and that three years ago the little Drill Hall served to accommodate the entries received. To-day, notwithstanding all the additions that the Society have made to the fine, new building, there is not sufficient accommodation for all that the Winter Show Committee would like to display for the public gaze, and applications for space have actually been refused. In many respects the present Show differs from its predecessors. For the first time, side-shows are installed, and the variety of entertainments offered should please everybody. Another feature of the Show are the piano recitals to be given by Miss Curran, of Wanganui, a child of 14 years of age who is considered one of the most wonderful musicians of her age in the Dominion at the present time. She plays on a Byers piano, and the first recital will be given at 3. o'clock this afternoon. One of the big attractions among the displays is the "district exhibits," and though only Omata and Bell Block are competing, the value of the two courts does not suffer | through insufficient" competition.' Everything that the district can produce, from butter to petroleum, is arranged on the crowded shelves, and. the variety and quality of the exhibits are quite an eyeopener. Three farmers are keenly contesting the class for the best exhibit from any one farm, and it is obvious that the judges will have difficulty in making their awards, lit is somewhat surprising, however, that more farmers .do not enter for this competition, as it affords an excellent opportunity of advertising their farms, and showing what good farming and cultivation will do. Quite a novelty is presented in the patent American bee-nive, which show the bees at work, without any fear of spectators being stung. Children's pcjs, of all sizes, shapes, and descriptions, form an interesting exhibition that should amuse both young and old. Ponies, cats, dogs, monkeys, and parrots figure in this unique collection. The | fact that fifty entries have been re- ; ceived in one of the fancy work classes is an eloquent tribute to the keen interest that many people arc taking in this section of the Show. Poultry are greatly in evidence, and splendid entries have been received, the pens containing some of the finest birds that have ever been shown in the Dominion. Four types of milking machine can be inspected in the machinery hall, advocates of the different make's having an opportunity of seeing the machines at work and side liy side. Tlie official opening, which is io he performed by Mr. H. J. H. Okev, M.P., takes place'at 2.30 this afternoon. THE DOfi TRTALS. _ln conjunction with the Show the Society is conducting two days' sheep dog trials at Frankleigh Park, ori Thursday and Friday, through the kindness of Mr. Cassidy and the Frankleigh Intension and Land Co., Ltd. The three different classes have each attracted an ayerage entry of 25 dogs, with competitors from all over the district, and as far as the South Island. For the convenience of the public, Mr. W. 11. Jury is viinnii'g a drag from town, leaving n'fc 5.15 on each morning of the trials, and if sufficient indnremeiif offers, suhse'•"•'iit trips will in, niade as required.
