LOCAL AND GENERAL.
The local Deeds Offiee have now entered into possession of the buildings lately erected, they having completed shifting operations yesterday. The Palmerston North Borough Council is sending its engineer to Gisborne to obtain particulars of the storage battery tramway system there. A double wedding usually creates considerable stir. Last week, however, this was easily eclipsed in New Plymouth when three sisters took the star part in as many weddings. During the progress of the " PateaWaverley match on Saturday, a .Waverley player named T. Gifford had his nose broken and severely cut just ahove the bridge, the wound necessitating several stitches. "The intention of the Legislature is a very uncertain thing to found a judgment on," remarked Mr. T. M. Wilford, in the Supreme Court at Wellington, "for it has been proved over and over again that the Legislature has done exactly the opposite of what it intended to do—for instance, the Motor Rcgula-< tion Act." At the Magistrate's Court yesterday, before Mr. A. Crooke, S.M.,'judgment by default was given in the case of Mrs. T. Crozier (Mr. D. Hutchen) v. Seymour de Grut, claim £1 14s with costs ss. In the case of James Henry Walker (Mr. D. Hutchen) v. H W. Uru, 'judgment on confession was given for £SO, and by default for costs £2 14s Cd. Complaint is made to us of the blockage of Devon street footpath by the rebuilding operations going on next to Morey and Son's. .At present ladies with perambulators are unable to negotiate the path, and it is suggested that the enclosure might very easily be moved back five or six feet, especially during j the present and next week, when the j traffic is likely to be greater than usual. An immense pig, which broke the steelyards at the New Plymouth abattoirs I when over OOOlbs had been registered, is | an attraction for our country friends who visit New Plymouth to-day and to-mor-row for the Winter Show. Messrs J oil Bros., of the Taranaki Meat Bazaar, purchased this fine animal, a purebred black Devon barrow, from Mr. W. James, the manager of Mr. Newton King's stud farm at Bell Block, and is now on view in their shop. Included in a remarkable collection of meat is an ox, weighing 13841b5, a Shorthorn heifer 12141b5, and ten sheep averaging 1041b apiece. A question of jurisdiction was raised in the New Plymouth Magistrate's Court '. wterday, in the case of Pitt Bros (Mr. A. 11. Johnstone) v. W. Sliarrock (R. H. Campbell, sub-debtor). Mr. A. H. Johnstone applied for a charging order nisi, for £25 10s <}d, obtained against R. H. Campbell as sub-debtor, to be made absolute. Mr. A. Crooke, S.M., said he doubted whether he had the power to grant an order absolute in a case which had been sent up from another Court. His Worship, however, certified that the sub-debtor had appeared before him, and had admitted a liability of £24 7s 6d.
The Brotherhood Debating Club last night argued the question "Is Married Life Happier than Single Life?" and the members present, by 20 votes to 5, decided that the answer was "Yes." The President of the Society (Mr. A. 11. Johnstone, L.L.8.), occupied the chair, and the leaders were:—Affirmative: Mr. G. H. Dolby, seconded by Rev. J. W. Burton. Negative: Mr. H. B. Reid, secj onded by MrS. Okey. The motion was very keenly debated, and productive of much interest and not a little amusement. The next debate will .be held in the Borough Council Chambers on Tuesday 24th, the motion being, "That Town Life is Preferable to Country Life." Passengers by train, especially on long distance journeys, who have complained, and not without cause, of the numerous interruptions caused by a guard or some official unceremoniously punching a hole in their ticket, until by the end of the journey it resembles nothing more than a colander, will be pleased to hear that a paternal Goyernmeij.t'Mias now presented each official with a- tick" et clipper of distinct design, so that each one earmarks the passenger's ticket with a pattern resembling a bell, a star, a cross, a crown, etc., and at the end of the journey the ticket becomes- quite a beautiful work of art, worthy of being kept in an autograph book as' a Wmento. Indeed, there is a great opportunity for increasing the Dominion's finances by selling the used tickets to collectors, who should be prepared to pay good prices for some unique specimens, once the ticket collecting mania becomes the rage. The New Plymouth Investment and Loan Society held its thirty-seventh annual meeting on Monday last, when Mr. J. B. Connett, chairman of directors, presided over a fair attendance of members. The annual report, which was adopted, stated the society was in a flourishing state, and the usual revision of securities by the directors had been made, proving in every case entirely satisfactory. The retiring directors were Messrs W. p. Brooking and 8. Teed, ImtJi ot whom won- eligible, and offered themselves for re-election. Two auditors would have to be appointed by the meeting in place of Messrs. J. S . McKellar and C. I-. I'oote, both of whom, however again offered their services. The retiring directors, Messrs. Brooking and Iced .were re-elected, and Messrs. J. S McKellar and C. V. Vooto were re-elected auditors. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded to the directors for their services during the past year, and they were also votwUhc usual honorarium. . A Native, named >£e Rawhiti, s wells known and impressive figure (metft» phorically and materially) in Maori politics, was in Kawhia last week. Th»' local paper states that Mahuta'a onetime secretary and adviser still mui»> tains his "weight" in both respects, hi* influence being still considerable, white ho pulls the scale at 24st 71b. At a meeting of the Hawera Chamber of Commeroe on Monday, the unsatisfactory state of the Patea Harbor wasdiscussed. The consensus of opinion was that the position was becoming seiious, and that if the port was to be retained something would have to be done immediately. As the Board had wmi' scheme under consideration, it wa« decided to tako no action in the meantime. At Hawera on Monday, Mr. Kenriek, S.M., gave his decision in the ca«« of A. H. Sorenson v. E. C. Barleymai, ii which plaintiff caimed £BS 8s Cd 4aat~ ages from tha defendant for negligently driving hia motor car go that he eollided with a motor cycle ridden by plaintiff. The Magistrate held that plaintiff had failed to prove negligence on the part of defendant, and judgment was given for the latter with costs totalling £5 10s. There was a ve/y good attendance at the second of the series of euchre part' ies and dances held last night in the Brougham Street Hall in aid of the funds for the circular road race. Thirtyfive tables were utilised for the euchre tournament. The prize-winner* proved to be: Ladies, Mrs. Steffanson (1001b of" flour),!; Mrs. MeKay (501b flour), 2. Gentlemen, S. Main (half-ton of coal), 1; A. McGiven (a razor), 2. The prizes were presented by Mr. Dinven (chairman, of the Entertainment Committee), after which supper was handed round. .Two or three hours' dancing was then indulged in to the strains of Mrs. George's orchestra. Messrs. Geo. Tabor and W". Way were the M.C.'s. During the evening, Mr. Keys rendered a song, which, was encored.
