THE AUSTRIAN SCANDAL.
A MINISTER'S STATEMENT. TREASON AND IMMORALITY. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Vienna, June 6. The Minister of Defence in the Reichstag said that Colonel Redl had passed judgment upon himself, though his death was no expiation of his monstrous villainy in having sold mobilisation plans to foreign States. He denied that the authorities had endeavored to hush the matter up. Colonel Redl, he continued, came to Vienna intending to commit suicide, and declared he had offended against morality, and tarnished his honor as a soldier. The Military Commissioner sent to arrest him had found Redl preparing to die. In his confession .Redl denied that he had any accomplices. The officer who was Redl's associate in his unnatural vice, hud been arrested, but was not connected with his treason.
The Minister did not explain why the Commissioner failed to arrest Colonel Redl or to prevent his committing suicide.
