WAITARA NEWS.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) The statement copied by you in Tuesday's issue in reference to the state of the river is entirely erroneous. The facts are that with only two barges in commission it is necessary that the utmost despatch be given to these, so as' to enable the Home boat to be loaded as quickly as possible, and in order to do this, it is found convenient to have the empty barges brought in early on the tide, so as to enable them to be both loaded and taken out so much earlier than the Tainui. Certainly the launch (Jid work two tides, but not as one would be led to believe, that the Tainui could not work at all owing to the bad state of the river and bar. As a matter of fact, the Tainui is doing the towing to the Surrey, and did the greater part of that to the Kaipara. The Fire Brigade ball on ,Tuesday night wa3 a big success, and reflected high crodit on the ladies who were responsible for the function, also on parents who went to so much time, trouble, and expense in costuming their children in fancy dresses. When the Mayoress and her willing band of workers set out to do a tiling, they do it well, and the present occasion was no exception. It is tho intention of Mr. Alf. Drake to leave Waitara shortly. Social func-, tions will be the loser if lie does, for lie is one of the most energetic of the many workers in tliis respect.

The work of demolishing the old bridge is going -along slowly. At the annual nu-rfing of the lieeiwing liciu'h on Wednesday, all applications for renewal* of lieee-ies were grunted.
