OTAGO WINTER SHOW.

A SUCCESSFUL AFFAIR.

Per Press Association. Dunedin, Tuesday. The Otago Agricultural and Pastoral Society's Winter Show opened to-day in fine weather, and there was a splendid attendance. Entries in cheese were somewhat smaller than usual, but the quality was excellent, the judges describing the exhibition as one of tho finest ever held here, and one which would hold its own in any centre. There is a remarkable degree of uniformity in the body and texture in practically every exhibit. The judges awarded the maximum points for get-up and finish. Competition ;in creamery butter was very keen, and in many cases the judges had great difficulty in arriving a* a decision. The official opening was performed by he Hon, M. D. Bell, who, referring to the (Opening if or our products in the; markets of the world, said that only the other day Ke waß talking to the greatest of London ipeat-sellers, who told him that they 'fully anticipated the opening up of Continental markets to the meat of this country. He believed also that there was great hope for the flax industry. Alter referring to the increasing exports ol dairy produce to Canada and South Africa, Mr. Bell said the values of dairy produce (butter and cheese) exported from New Zealand during the past year had exceeded by half a million the 'value of;dairy produce exported during tlie preceding year.. The entries totalled ,1297, as-against, 1393 last year. The falting-off was chiefly in grain, roots and cheese, the bad season affecting the growth of grain and roots, while the shortage of cheese was due primarily to the fact that a considerable number of factories did not forward exhibits.

The takings to-day were £333, as against £167 on the first day of last year.
