THE CATCHER CAUGHT.
AN AMUSING INCIDENT. Auckland, June 1. The catcher was caught. While riding on a tramear recently, a constable saw a motor-car Hash bv at what he described as fifty miles an hour. Clouds of dust prevented him taking the number of t'he car, but he subsequently identified it, and the driver was summoned for driving at a dangerous speed. When the case came on in the Police Court yesterday it transpired that the motorcar had been chartered bv the assistanttraffic inspector in order to pursue some other motor-cars which were going at an excessive speed, necessitating the pursuing car travelling at an even greater pace. .Air. R, C. Cutten, S.M.. smilingly explained that this was no defence. It seemed like a case of setting a thief to enteh a thief, or a case of the catcher caught. The driver of the taxicab, Adrian Wilkins, whose car was thus commandeered by the assistant traffic inspector, was convicted and fined 10s and costs. It was suggested that doubtless the City Council would square up matters with' him.
