RAILWAY APPEAL BOARD.
NELSON CASES.
Per Press Association.
Nelson, Monday.
A sitting of the Railway Appeal Board was held here to-day, Mr. W. E. Haselden, S.M., presiding, and Messrs J. Gray and P. Gains representing the first and second divisions respectively. Mr. M. Dennehy, of Wanganui, appeared for the appellants, and Mr. Davidson for the Department. Wm, Dougan (stationmaster at Wakefield), A. Smart (stationmaster at Koliatu), Jas. A. McCaskey (clerk at the Port) and Geo. G. Stewart (clerk at Nelson) appealed against being superseded in the classification list by a number of foremen and ticket inspectors. After hearing evidence as to the appellants' efficiency, the Board held that the grievance was not. substantial. The chairman said that the appellants ought to be satisfied with the statement repeatedly made on behalf of the head of the Department that these accidental consequences of increases of pay to men appointed as coaching and goods foremen and ticket inspectors would be avoided as opportunity arose for considering the claims of appellants that they would not suffer hardship, and that their promotion in the service would not be retarded.
C. .T. McEachen (chief clerk at Nelson) and W. E. Tregurtha (chief clerk at Picton) appealed against being superseded. For the Department it was contended that the men appointed had special qualifications. The appellants were excellent officials and would receive promotion as opportunity offered. ' Decision was reserved.
