FOOTBALL.

WANGANUI NOTES. Ideal weather conditions, and the prospect of seeing a close contest at; tracted a big crowd to the Rugby game, Pirates v. Kaierau. The latter'team was not up to full strength, but what there was of it went well till the last few strides. Kaierau hopped out' smartest and quickly led by a try (unconverted), but the Blacks at once drew level with a penalty goal. Then both sides took a pull, and things .grew as dull and useless as the Gaming Act. At the turn Pirates were pushing hard, and Kaierau, crumpling up in the last bit, the former spurted again and again, and ran in easy winners by seventeen (one converted try, three tries and a penalty goal) to three ■points, (a try)/ Pirates were hot favorites for the contest.

Big scoring in the League match saw the invincible City team down St. Johns by 28 to 19. City scored just when their "tired feeling" wasn't quite as noticeable as usual, and the game was nothing to enthuse over. The Leaguers have a few of the finest .players in Wanganui, but the forwards in all teams are mostly below junior form.

The Wanganui Rugby teflm to (neet Taranaki to-day is ■ not up to its full strength, but the local boys promise the visitors an interesting game.
