NEWS AND' NOTES. The representative team to play Wanganui was published in yesterday's paper, and no doubt ere this the ,work of the selectors has been keenly criticised by football enthusiasts, who contain among their ranks many who in their own estimation could beat any selector out of sight in choosing a team.' It is to be regretted, however, that in the majority of cases their vision is completely obscured once it gets beyond the fifteen comprising their own particular club. One must admit that there is little to cavil at in the personnel of the team. So early in the season it is hard to gauge the form of new aspirants to representative honor and past reputation provided the player shows a glimpse of the past year's play, goes a long way. Consequently it is not surprising to see that fourteen of the fifteen selected have already donned the amber-and-black ierseys, whilst the fifteenth, Cade, visited laranaki with the Canterbury team last year. On this year's form, however all are worthy of places, with the possible exception of Hawkins. The ex-Star forward only played one game prior to selection, and was then palpably out of form but he is a good player when fit, and last Thursday's game against Clifton showed him a much improved player, the most noticeable alteration in the team is that McLeod goes from fiveeights to full-back. McLeod is a great defensive player, but his play in the important position of five-eighth was spoilt by a tendency to hang on to the leather and ignore the men behind him. In order to give new aspirants to representative honors an opportunity of showing their metal, a match has 'been arranged to take place at New Plymouth on Thursday of show week between teams representing North and South laianaki. This will replace the Thursday v. Saturday North match which had been arranged, and which will probably be played later in the season. Creat interest used formerly to be taken I" .i -A V " Rout ' ) mate 1 ', but latterly it has been played too lute in the Beason to bo of much use, It should however, prove very interesting thi" year, as there are several players in eaeli division who will be keen to catch the selector's eye, At the meeting of the Taranaki Ru«bv Union on Thursday it was decided" to play Auckland at Auckland on August 9 and Wairarapa at Wairarapa on August -0, when en route to Wellington. Auckland. however, lias accepted the challenge of Poverty Bay for a Ranfurly Shield mateh on August 0, and consequently the Taianaki match will not eventuate until August 111, This will necessitate rearranging the fixtures, aR the stress of (ravelling would be too irreat to allow ot Taranaki playing Wairarapa oil the \ ediif'Mi.av lifter Auckland, if ihev are to do justice in the match against Wellington the following Saturday. Wairarapa will possibly be plaved' on the return journey from Wellington. If the financial position permits, a laranaki Ti team will be sent to play Manawatu. Horowhenua and Rusb Unions. Such a tour would be of incalculable benefit to Taranaki football, and it is hoped it can be arranged The matter will be fully discussed at, nextmeeting of the Union.
Messrs Pitman Bros., of Ir.glewoodA have presented the Rugby Union with a handsome silver cup for competition annually among the primary schools of the northern division. The cup has to be won three times before it can become the property of any school. School football in this division is now on a satisfactory basis, and it is pleasing to see enthusiasts fostering it in this way. No fewer than six school teachers are playing in the Saturday division in North Taranaki. While teachers are so enthusiastic, there is no need to fear the decline of Rugby football in public schools. Compared with the game against Stratford on the previous week, last Thursday's match on Western Park was very disappointing. The reason may be found in the fact that Tukapa's clever rearguard got very few chances of opening up the game. Cain and Bernsten were hooking in great style, and at times the ball shot from the scrum with such rapidity that it completely beat Crowley. But Clifton made little use of the many opportunities given them, and their passing work was faulty in the extreme. Towards the end of the second half the Clifton forwards tired, and Tukapa were given an opportunity of showing what they could do. Some of the passing work was magnificent, and it was only bad luck that prevented a score. Brown was quick to seize any openings, and repeatedly beat the opposition. Loveridge was in good form, and played witn plenty of dash. Both he and Brown have certainly earned their places in the reps. Hawkins was prominent in the Tukapa; vanguard, hut Cain was easily the best forward on the ground: Stolir kicked with his customary brilliancy, and made several runs that considerably enlivened a dull game. The sturdy Ward was milssed from the Tukapa pack. He broke a small bloodvessel in his leg while playing against Stratford, and was reluctantly forced to take a 6pell. SECOND JUNIOR COMPETITION. Owing to Eltliam having withdrawn, from the second junior competition, it has been necessary to re-arrange the fixtures. The re-arrangement enables New Plymouth High School to take up the matches they were unable to play during the school vacation, without causing any delay. The fixtures are as follows: June 12—Clifton v. Stratford, at Stratford, 1.30 p.m.; Star v. Stratford D.H.S., at New Plymouth, 1.30 p.m.; Technical College v. N.P.H.S., at 1.30 p.m. June I!) Clifton v. N.P.H.S., at Waitara, 1.30 p.m.; Stratford D.11.5. v Stratford, 1.30 p.m.; Star v. Technical College, 3 p.m. June 26—Stratford D.H.S. v. Technical College, at Stratford, 1.30 p.m.; N.P.H.S. v. Stratford, at New Plymouth, 1.30 p.m.; Star v. Clifton, a bye. ' SATURDAY FIXTURES. The second round of Saturday fixtures has also been drawn up. On Show Saturday both country teams will be playing in town, and it is possible that j one of the matches will be played at 1.30 p.m. and the other at 3 p.m., thus en- I .abling show patrons to view both 1 matches. The delayed train that even- J ing will enable the Inglewood team to ' make the journey by train with a minimum of inconvenience:— June 7 —Okato v. Inglewood, at Okato; Star v. Rovers (Star match). June 14—Okato v. Rovers, at New Plymouth; Inglewood v. Star, at New Plymouth. June 21—Rovers v. Inglewood, at Inglewood; Star v. Okato, at New Plymouth. TARANAKI RUGBY UNION.
