DISTRICT NEWS.

I MAKETAWA. ! (From our Own Correspondent), j Extraordinary rougU weather was exj peneuced on tne lutu and three followI mg days—wind, rain and hail squalls I of undue severity. At times the rainfall i verged on the phenomenal, and the etl'ect is- shown on the metalled roads in many places. The temperature on the 21st 22nd was very low, and several, very I hard frosts resulted. Needless to say, I the milch cattle resent such treatment, and the supply of milk to the factory and creamery is just about "done." A very enjoyable social was held in the Norfolk school on Friday last. A large number attended from various parts of the district, Hawera, Tariki and the immediate district contributing. The affair, which was in aid of the school funds, was arranged by a committee; of which Mr. K. Corney is hon, secretary. Norfolk; School, ; -.since 'the alterations were made; has grown in favor as a placs •for entertainment, and the excellence of the management no doubt has been a big lever to the end attained. . I understand that Mr. J. Wisnewskihas leased his farm and herd to Mr. J. Stachurski, who will take up his residence during the next few days.

Mr. J. Flintoff will take possession of a farm he has purchased at Tarata about the end of June, and I hear that a Mr. W. Geqrge will take his place as sharemilker on Haslett's' Durham road farm.

Much sympathy is expressed with Mr. and Mrs. Jones, of Lower Durham road, through the death .of their _ daughter,; Mrs. Bell. Mr. arid Mrs. Jones were away on a holiday, and their married daughter had taken charge in their absence, and her sudden demise cajused. quite- a shock in the district. , The Durham and Norfolk schools.closed on Friday last for the 'winter" h'oli-* days, re-opening on June 2. 'As June 3 is booked as a holiday (the King's Birthday), it, doe's seem a farce to get the children together for one day. Why not have included the 3rd in the original fixture? The tit-bit in the News regarding the buffeting given the Moa Road Board as to a £ 300 loan by the Advances Department and the Trust Department makes choice reading. As Sir Joseph Ward was instrumental in successfully arranging a big loan for a public body in Southland, notwithstanding the tight money market, the Moa Road Board could, perhaps, avail itself of his services. Um! it makes one think!

The Farmers' Organisation Society will evidently advance another stage towards completion after the 31st inst. A delegate meeting at Hawera on that date, will finally approve of the prospec-' it'us, etc., which, I helieve, has been in the lawyers' hands and approved by the executive committee at the meeting on May 3. At -a recent householders' meeting a resolution was sent to the Durham School Committee asking that body to approach the Board regarding appointing the present temporary teacher (Miss Meyer) as permanent. The committee has, I understand, forwarded the request to the Board, and as the teacher is prepared to accept the permanency, parents hope their request will meet with favor at the hands of the Board.

A move is evidently being made regarding metalling the mud portion of Upper Norfolk road, judging by the application as to cost at a recent meeting of the Moa Road Board . A large, block of land is at present tied up from producing on account of the bad road, and no doubt a metalled road would he oi immense benefit to all the immediate (lis-' trict. It would be as well for the par-, ties interested to enquire as.to the advantage of opening the Derby road, which, opening on the Durham road, would enable the produce of the block in question to come .to ' the Durham creamery, and also enable the children to attend the Durham School. The ' short distance of the necessary road (about 70 odd chain) in the good country through which it passes and the proximity of a splendid supply of stone are factors well worth considering, leaving out the few miles saved in getting to Insjlewood. I understand that there are 15 sections that would benefit by the opening of Derby road, and the productiveness of the district would be largely increased, while the easy access I to the creamery and school should prevent further outlay by the Dairy Company and the Education Department in the near future. Certain .it is that parties interested should bestir . themselves in order that the matter will be considered on all points as affecting the future. Tf any case is worth considering by the fiovernment, the bettering of the acepss to.Upper Norfolk road is one.

The usual fortnightly dance for the Durham district will be held in the school on Friday evening, and, given a fine night, is hound to be very successful, as a large number from outside have intimated their intention to be present. The interchange of visits by residents in various parts at these functions is conducive to very pleasant evenings, the popularity of which is on the increaseas it should be. Durham Road, 27/5/13.
