STRATFORD NEWS.
BOROUGH COUNCIL ENTERPRISE Tile Works Committee of the Borough Council went yesterday per motor-car to inspect the tar-sprayed road surfaces in the, Eltham county. The Council has in view the purchase of a tar-spraying machine, and the inspection of the roads will have a bearing upon the ultimate decision. We now have a steam roller, and in prospective a stone-crusher and tarspraying apparatus, so that in the very near future Stratford should'have some roads to be really pleas"ed with. There is no doubt that our main thoroughfare is in. need of some little attention to bring it up to the state in which we would like to see it. SCOTTISH GATHERING Mr. D. Butchart, secretary of the Taranaki Provincial, Scottish Soeicty, announces that all things are working together for gopd in connection with the annual Scottish gathering to be held in .'thei. Stttftfprd,TOwn Hall on June ,12. l Alnpngtlie'taient the Hhhvera male quartette, whose concerted itemswere such a .treat at the Burns gathering in January last. Exceptional talent is also ?being engaged from the larger centres. ." FOOTBALL I "Eltham forfeit; will play Tuesday if This was the telegram, addressed to "Kirkwood's Hotel, Stratfqrd;'. v which announced to the Stratford'.people at three o'clock that the Eltham v. Stratford senior f6otball match was off. The local team was already op. the ground, and was not too well pleased with the turn of affairs. From the fact that the message was put in at 2.20 p.m. at Eltham, it may be conceded that the efforts to collect fifteen men for the Stratford trip were not relinquished until the hour for the team to leave. There are a few really good sports in Eltham, who are working hard to work up football matters down there, and it is a pity that the players are not '"playing up to them." The Stratford' men indulged in a useful practice. There is a strong possibility that "Dud" Cameron, one of the most promising footballers in Wanganui, and one of the well-known Stratford Cameron clan, will be found in the Stratford Club's playing ranks before long. He is a very useful man. is Dud —fast, nippy &Ad plucky.

The paucity of the attendance caused a postponement of the debate on the question, is War Justified?" Thesubject will be taken next Wednesday evening. Driving without lights near Toko on Wednesday evening, the occupants of a gig received the worst of encounters with i'an unlighted spring dray which was proceeding in the opposite direction. Mr. Hart, an Inglewodd contractor, was driving in from Huiroa to Stratford, and the two vehicles ,met on a bridge near Toko. Mr. Hart had to be medically attended to, and his companion was also seriously bruised. Who were the occupants of the dray, or what their injuries, is still unknown.
The Stratford School pupils will not re-assemble until Wednesday, June 4, the School Committee having decided that it is quite unnecessary to bring the children to school on Monday when they have a holiday on the Tuesday, which is the King's Birthday. Doubtless the teachers will appreciate the committee's action, for it means they can return from their holidays on Tuesday instead of Saturday. A comparatively new settler between Toko and Strathmore is making a name for himself. He is a Mr. Gray, who has taken up about 2000 acres of land on both sides of the main Ohura read, in the vicinity of the Makahu stream. Bush-felling and draining have been going on apace, and soon a very rough and hilly property and an almost impassable swamp will be brought into a high state of productivity. The fences erected are" of a most substantial character. As the result of Tuesday's circuit of the borough by the Works Committee it is understood that several'foopaths and other improvements asked for in various localities will be recommended to the Council for immediate execution. "I saw a motorist on a country road the other dav," said one Stratfordite to a other, "guiding the car with one band and eating a pie with the other." "Really," said the other, "and what was be doing with his mouth?" Tableau.
